Since 2013, the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) of the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has offered U.S. military veterans and active duty service members the option to have a their Arizona driver license, commercial driver license, identification card, or instruction permit include a Veteran Designation denoting their service. Certain U.S. military veterans and active duty service members are also eligible for a waiver of the Commercial Driver License skills test.

What is an Arizona Driver License Veteran Designation?

An Arizona driver license, commercial driver license, instruction permit, or identification card with a Veteran Designation has the word “VETERAN” on the front in blue lettering.

Who is eligible to receive a Veteran Designation?

U.S. military veterans and active duty service members are eligible to receive a Veteran Designation.

How does someone apply for a Veteran Designation? 

Any U.S. military veteran or active duty service member who would like a Veteran Designation should complete either the Arizona Driver License/Identification Card application (https://apps.azdot.gov/mvd/Application/ApplicationForm.aspx) or the Commercial Driver License application (https://www.azdot.gov/docs/default-source/mvd-forms-pubs/40-5124.pdf?sfvrsn=19), either by filling out then printing out the online forms or visiting the nearest Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office or authorized third-party provider.

The initial application for a Veteran Designation must be submitted in person and will require a new photo of the applicant. Standard transaction fees will be applied.

Are certain U.S. military veterans and active duty service members eligible for a waiver of the Commercial Driver License skills test?

Yes. Any U.S. military veteran or active duty service member who would like to apply for a Commercial Driver License (CDL) may have the required skills test waived if the applicant meets each of the following two conditions:

  1. the applicant is either on active duty or separated within the last year under honorable conditions AND
  2. the applicant certifies that he or she has operated a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) or equivalent for at least two years immediately preceding discharge or applying for the waiver.

Any U.S. military veteran or active duty service member who would like a waiver of the CDL skills test should complete the waiver application (https://azdot.gov/docs/default-source/mvd-forms-pubs/96-0680.pdf?sfvrsn=6), either by filling out then printing out the online form or visiting the nearest MVD CDL office.
